Our lives are but a passing moment
One songwriter likens us to a ‘leaf on a windy day‘ that is pretty soon to be blown away. James 4:14 uses the image of morning fog, that is ‘here a little while, and then gone’
While this may very well be true, our lives hold eternal value; reflecting the very image of God. And no matter the length of time we have, there is potential to make a huge impact in this world.
This explains the deep longing inside each one of us to be a part of something larger than ourselves; something that will live on.
We want to be remembered as one of the Greats
To have our names written in the history books
But the heavy weight of the past, present and future can often take a toll on us.
Likely there are regrets looking back or uncertainty about what lies ahead; and this causes hesitation in our choices each day.
For some of us, thinking of the future evokes worry. We try to convince ourselves we can remain in the present, yet the tighter we hold, the harder the inevitable loss is that follows; reminding us that a life gripped by worry is no life at all.
For others, comfort is found through planning that peaceful retirement we so ‘deserve’. While this may be responsible, it carries the potential to become obsessive and stressful; budgeting every facet of life down to the last penny.
Then there are those that do neither; as one famous physicist stated ‘the best preparation for the future is to live as if there were none’ And while this philosophy may bring ‘peace’ for the moment, those who adopt it will soon have a tough pill to swallow when the reality hits in… there is indeed a future coming; one which we all have to face.
In the end, we learn we are at the mercy of an unpredictable market that could crash without notice; a market that cares not about the plans, stress or worry we pay into it.
So then, if not the market of life, what should we be paying into? How do we make the most of our moment in time?
Matthew 25:29 states that ‘To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.’
In one way or another, we are all rich beyond measure. But this wealth is dependent on our choices. Use it well, and it will be increased; don’t and lose it all.
This isn’t the time to be investing our life’s savings in a risky portfolio that is hot for a moment, but can quickly tank. No, we need to go with the sound option that promises a good and abundant return.
We must put aside the fleeting things the world offers us; locking into sound stocks which will bring abundance and change the course of history.
Of course, what we are talking about here is much larger than our bank accounts; in fact, it spans far beyond our lifetime. It represents the things that money cannot buy, but demands greater care and diligence.
It is the difference between securing a stable financial future for those we care about, and seeking security for their spiritual future.
It is the realization that it’s not about me or my desires, but instead about my contributions into the lives of others; specifically in matters of their heart.
It is the true legacy investment we have been looking for; Not merely in the here and now which will pass away, but into the here and after which is everlasting.
If we want to create a ripple that lasts generations, then we need to pick up the stone and throw it in the right direction.
Let us remember, what matters is not how many days we have left, but what is left after our days.
This is our time to grow…
