All men are searching for something; although it is often unknown
We may not realize we are searching, but we all feel it most days
It’s the deep longing within, the empty void we struggle to fill and the desire to discover somewhere… that is worthy of our exploration
Often we will feel this search stirring at the end of the day. Out of the dark and quiet, comes the sense we are not living up to or fulfilling our life’s purpose. Questions will arise like ‘Where am I going with my life?’ or ‘How did I end up here?’ From there the emotions will range wildly before coming to the conclusion that… We know there is more, and we want to discover it
We want to set off on a journey; our own personal Odyssey
And so, we attempt to do just that
We will journey many roads on this search; pursuits of knowledge, power, and possessions to name a few. And while those all may undoubtedly feel like the answer, likely even bring much joy and fulfillment… The true search continues
It can begin to feel like a wayfarer who sets out on a journey. With no idea where he is headed and no map to reference, he will quickly become lost; Isaiah 53:6 uses the phrase, ‘gone astray‘ to describe this man
Quickly the thrill of adventure turns to confusion and panic as the fear of failure sets in. Of course, while we would never admit we are afraid, these moments are inevitable along our journey
We’ve all heard the jokes about men being too proud to ask for directions; but let’s be honest, there is a lot of truth in the stories we laugh at. Many of us will circle the desired destination over and over, spending endless amounts of time and resources, before we lowered ourselves to simply stop and ask for directions. The reality is we are often too hard-headed and stubborn to ask for help; it somehow makes us less of a man, right?
Men, we need to stop and ask ourselves, could this be true in our lives? Are we running on fumes, desperate to arrive before the needle hits empty, but truly have no idea where we are? or where we are going?
Thinking we can do this on our own is foolish and will get us in some bad situations. Perhaps there are those who find themselves in this place today
There is no shame in accepting guidance. Even the most competent of explorer won’t deny that The Way is always guided
Each of us need to humbly look to The One that Luke 19:10 says came to ‘seek and save the lost’
He has journeyed these roads and knows the way home
He will never leave our side and He will always make our path clear
So before we set out, why not stop for a moment and simply ask Him to be our guide on this incredible voyage ahead.
