Isn’t the visibility often poor in our minds?
Like the captain of a ship who finds himself in a thick fog, we can lose our sense of direction and easily go off course.
Before we know it, we are far from where we started, where we wanted to be; with little understanding of how we got there.
In this cognitive cloud, there is risk of wreckage. Frustration, anger and anxiety will quickly capsize our lives if not kept under control. Many of us men believe knowledge alone is our most powerful asset, but the various routes within our mind can lack clarity and result in us going down one of the two following paths…both of which put our passengers and ourselves at risk.
The first passage is named the way of pride. Here, we tell ourselves we know all and we know best; there is little place for others because they will only get in the way or threaten our position. This route ends in destruction as we recklessly go full ahead with no consideration to the warnings or dangers ahead.
The second passage, the way of self-doubt will have us hesitating at each turn and questioning every decision we make. We will lose confidence in our ability to navigate our ship, even when our crew believes in us; here uncertainty clouds all truth. This route ends stranded and lost at sea, terrorized by pirates who affirm our doubts and worst fears of never finding the way home.
How many of us are sadly familiar with these routes; so familiar actually, that we have become used to this life on the sea. While we initially may have set out with the best of intentions, the chaos and confusion we found left us feeling like a tiny sailboat in the middle of a powerful hurricane. The result? Many ships left abandoned or shipwrecked.
In some cases, years pass by as we try to find our own way home; Mistaking a passing ship or buoy in the distance as the way to safety and blindly following for great lengths of time before realizing the error of our way… discouraged and without hope.
So then, how do we navigate these dark waters?
How do we lift the fog blanketing our lives?
How do we make it Home?
The reality is we can’t… at least not on our own.
It’s in these times we need to slow down and proceed with caution. This isn’t the time to panic or go full speed ahead. Nor should we trust our own instincts… that’s what got us into this mess.
We must simply take our position at the helm, and be on the lookout for…
