What is the Call?
As men, what is our Call?
And what are doing to meet that Call?
Jack London’s ‘Call of the Wild’ follows a domesticated dog named Buck who finds himself displaced and sold as a sled dog in the Alaskan wilderness. Through the experience, Buck learns to embrace his animal instincts developing a strong and primal connection to the wild. It’s a journey of self-discovery and survival, ultimately ending with Buck embracing the call placed upon his life. Against all odds Buck adapts to his hostile environment, ultimately becoming the leader of the pack.
Like Buck, there is a call upon each one of us; one that speaks deep into our core… as Psalm 42:7 says the “Deep calls to deep…” And while we all have a deep longing to discover this call, we are often too distracted to hear it; much like the calls of nature can no longer be heard through the noise of our cities.
Stop for a moment and try to hear it…
It may be distant at first, but in time we will come to recognize it.
It is the longing deep within; the desire to be a part of something larger than ourselves… To be the leaders we were made to be and leave a true legacy. How often do we lose heart in this pursuit though, because we don’t have a clear method or means to accomplish it.
And so, we often retreat…
Back into the safety of the domesticated life we have become so accustomed to; accepting this must be all there is. Simply put, we have become so used to the counterfeit and comfortable “callings” we have heard all our lives, that the sound of a raw genuine call is unfamiliar and uncomfortable to us.
Yet all the while, we live with the underlying feeling of emptiness because we know we aren’t truly heeding the call that our hearts are hungry for… that we were made for
It’s important though that we understand the real thing can only be found out there… in the harsh wilderness. We will need courage to face the many dangers and predators that are looking to scare us back indoors. We must accept the reality that there is an unseen power struggle taking place, a territorial battle for dominance… and we are thrown in the middle of it like a house dog dropped into the Yukon.
We have a choice to make; Stay safe indoors or…
Venture out into the unknown, adapt to the hostile environment, and embrace the call placed on our heart. We were meant to overcome and declare our position as the leader of our pack.
But to do this, we will need to bravely step out and step up
This is your call… this is…
The Call
